If you tend to keep moving files to the trash on your Mac, but forget to empty it, there’s a way you can automatically empty trash from your Mac every 30 days.
The files in the trash on your Mac continue to take up space on your hard drive until you empty the trash. If you don’t want to have to remember to empty the trash, you can have macOS Sierra do it for you.
NOTE: This feature does not actually empty all the items in the Trash at the same time after 30 days. Each individual file in the Trash will be deleted after it’s been there for 30 days. In addition, this feature is only available in macOS Sierra 10.12 or newer.
Step 1
To automatically empty the the macOS Trash after 30 days, click on the desktop to activate the Finder menu bar. Then, select Preferences from the Finder menu.
Step 2
On the Finder Preferences dialog box, click Advanced on the toolbar.
Step 3
Then, check the “Remove items from the Trash after 30 days” box.
Step 4
Close the Finder Preferences dialog box by clicking the X button.
If you decide you don’t want the Trash to be automatically emptied anymore, simply uncheck the “Remove items from the Trash after 30 days” box in the Finder Preferences.
Even with this setting on, you can still manually empty the macOS trash by right-clicking on the Trash icon on the dock and selecting Empty Trash from the pop-up menu.
Now, wouldn’t it be nice if the household trash would get emptied automatically as well?
