If you’ve a factory unlocked iPhone 5 and are planning to use a prepaid SIM card from a local GSM carrier on your next trip abroad, then there is a high probability that the carrier won’t offer a Nano SIM for your iPhone 5.

While you can convert a normal/mini SIM or Micro SIM into a Nano SIM with a pair of scissors or Xacto knife, it may not be very convenient when you’re travelling.

The good news is that converting the Mini SIM or Micro SIM to a Nano SIM just got a lot easier as folks at MicroSIMCutter.com and other have recently launched a Nano SIM Cutter. Just like the Micro SIM Cutter, the Nano SIM cutter resembles a small stapler, which punches the chip from the SIM card at the appropriate dimensions to be used with the iPhone 5.

It’s the easiest way to convert the micro SIM or Mini SIM into a Nano SIM.

The cutter is available for $19.95 and comes with two adapters: one to convert the Nano SIM back to a Mini SIM and one to transform it back to Micro SIM dimensions.

Until there is a wider availability of the Nano SIM cards, the cutter seems like best option, especially for people who travel abroad frequently and want to use prepaid SIM card from a local GSM carrier to avoid the exorbitant international roaming charges. In addition to MicroSIMCutter.com, there are other vendors like Noosy who are currently selling the Nano SIM cutters.

If you want to do it the hard way then you can follow the video guide that we’ve embedded below, which makes use of the template created by Christian von der Ropp that you can print out and size up precisely to convert the Mini SIM or Micro SIM card into a Nano SIM card.
