Apple introduced a method to recover deleted, lost, or removed Contacts, Calendars, Reminders and files from your iCloud account few days back. Whether you deleted a contact or reminder on accident or had a rogue application erase some of your iCloud data, you can now quickly recover those items without the need for a third-party application.

This iCloud recovery option is just another low-profile feature addition to iOS, similar to the flight tracker we recently covered. To access this feature you will need to log into your iCloud account online. There is no method for iCloud recovery inside the iCloud application.

Step 1.

Log into your iCloud account with your Apple ID and password via the browser on your mobile device or computer. If you’ve enabled two-factor authentication, you will also need to enter the generated code sent to your trusted device.

iCloud Login

Step 2.

Once logged in to your iCloud account, click or tap on the Settings icon and head to the bottom of the page where you will see the Advanced section.

iCloud - Settings

Step 3.

You will see option to Restore: Files, Contacts, and Calendars and Reminder. Click on the type of you content you wish to restore.

You can also select one of the restore options in the following step by clicking or tapping on the corresponding tab.

Step 4a.

Follow the directions for your particular restore option. For Contacts, and Calendars and Reminders, simply select a date or restore file you want to recover, tap Restore, and wait for the restoration process to finish.

You will be notified upon completion.

iCloud Restore - CompleteNote:

  • The archive of contacts you select will replace contacts on all your devices
  • Your current contacts will be archived so that you can get them back if needed

Step 4b.

For Files, select the file(s) your wish to recover and hit Restore file(s). Your files will then be restored and accessible via iCloud Drive. The files available are from applications that support iCloud Drive (Pages, Keynote, TextEdit, Napkin, etc.) and were created within the last 30 days.

This is a handy addition for all iCloud users. Previously if you deleted iCloud files or contacts they would be gone for good. This new iCloud recovery provides a nice fallback for those of us that may delete something accidentally.
