Turn iPhone into iPad

Though a lot of discussion has happened over the iPad in the past one week, a vast majority of us will not get to lay our hands on the device for at least another month.

If you are curious to check out the look and feel of an iPad in the mean time, folks at Redmond Pie have a nice solution – Turn your iPhone or iPod touch into an iPad look-a-like.

As we know, the iPad runs on iPhone OS 3.2, which is an updated version of the operating system that drive the iPhone and iPod touch. This apart, the iPad has a few things different from the iPhone like an iBooks store, a different interface background, etc. By making these changes on your iPhone, you can have an idea of what to expect on an actual iPad.

First and foremost, you will need to jailbreak your iPhone. You can check out our tutorial on jailbreaking your iPhone by clicking here. Please note that hacking your iPhone could void its warranty and hence proceed at your own risk.

Once you have jailbroken your iPhone, you will need to download and install these jailbreak apps on your iPhone

  • Winterboard app from Cydia to install custom themes
  • "Simple iPad theme" via Cydia
  • FakeCarrier app via Cydia to change the carrier name. Alternatively, as folks at Redmond Pie suggest, you can also MakeItMine app to achieve this
  • Shrink app via Cydia to reduce the size of the icons. This helps to provide the more spaced out layout as available on the iPad
  • ProSwitcher app via Cydia for multitasking
  • NYTimes app for iPhone from the App Store
  • "Classics" iPhone app from App Store
  • Kindle iPhone app from the App Store

Folks at Redmond Pie also have a nice video that will take you through the process. Check it out and do let us know how it goes.
