How to use Facebook Messenger on your Mac using Messages App

If you’re not chatting with your friends or coworkers on Google Chat (gchat), you’re probably using Facebook Chat while at work. In order to use Facebook chat on your computer, you must be logged into Facebook.com, which is never really a good look if your boss walks by. However, if you are running OS X Yosemite, you can use the Messages app to have your Facebook conversations instead.

How to Use Facebook Messenger on your Mac using Messages App

Step 1.
Open the Messages application in Finder or from your dock. In the Messages Menu select “Add Account”.

Step 2.
You will notice that you can add a Google, Yahoo, or AOL account, but we are going to choose the last option, “Other messages account”.  Messages - Add Account

Step 3.
In the following menu select “Jabber” in the Account Type drop-down menu. In the Account Name section, enter your Facebook ID followed by @chat.facebook.com. Enter in your Facebook password and then hit “Create”.

If you do not know your Facebook ID you can find it by logging into Facebook.com. You user ID will located as shown below:

Step 4.
Once you hit Create, your Facebook friends will populate in the “Buddies” list. You can also hit the “Add” icon in the main menu and select Buddies to find the list again.

Simply select a friend that is online and begin chatting.

When you open up the Messages app again, you’ll be automatically logged into your Facebook Chat account until you log out. You can do so by going to Messages in the menu and logging out of your account.
