Apple introduced iPhone X (X pronounced “ten”) at the special event at Steve Jobs Theatre in the Apple Park campus on September 12, alongside iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. It’s the premium, high-end model in Apple’s 2017 iPhone lineup.
It features an all-screen design, an 5.8-inch OLED display, wireless charging, dual-lens cameras with improved depth sensing, and a facial recognition system called Face ID, and lacks the iconic Home button.
iPhone X Hardware Specifications
Apple’s flagship iPhone comes with a 5.8-inch diagonal OLED screen with 2436-by-1125-pixel resolution at 458 ppi dubbed Super Retina HD. The display features True Tone technology which was first introduced in iPad Pro in 2016. It uses ambient light sensors to adapt the display’s white balance to the surrounding ambient light.
It comes in two storage capacities: 64GB and 256GB, and comes in two color options: space gray and silver.
It is powered by Apple’s new A11 Bionic chip with 64-bit architecture. The A11 Bionic system-on-chip includes a hexa-core processor with two cores optimized for performance that is 25% faster than the A10 Fusion processor, and four efficiency-optimized cores that are 70% faster than the previous generation. The A11 Bionic chip also features the first Apple-designed graphics processing unit and a Neural Engine. The Neural engine is purpose-built for machine learning, a type of artificial intelligence that enables computers to learn from observation. It is used for recognizing people, places, and objects, and iPhone X’s new features like Face ID and Animoji.
It also features Face ID, a facial recognition system, which replaces Touch ID, Apple’s fingerprint sensor. The Face ID sensor consists of two modules: a dot projector internally called the “Romeo” projects more than 30,000 infrared dots onto the user’s face, and the infrared camera internally called “Juliet” reads the pattern. The pattern is then sent to the Secure Enclave in the A11 Bionic chip to confirm a match with the phone owner’s face. Face ID has received positive reviews from users and critics. However, it has been a hit and miss with identical twins and has been fooled by a special 3D printed mask.
It comes with a dual-camera system on the rear. The dual-cameras are placed vertically unlike iPhone 7 Plus. The 12-megapixel wide-angle camera has a f/1.8 aperture that supports face detection, high dynamic range, and optical image stabilization. The secondary, telephoto lens features 2× optical zoom and 10× digital zoom with a wider aperture of f/2.4. It also features optical image stabilization, which wasn’t available in iPhone 7 Plus. It allows you to take photos with specific depth-of-field using the Portrait mode. You can also take photos with Lightning effects in portrait mode thanks to the dual-sensing cameras and facial mapping. It also has a quad-LED True Tone flash with 2× better light uniformity. iPhone X is capable of capturing 4K video at 24, 30 or 60 frames per second, or 1080p video at 30, 60, 120 or 240 frames per second.
iPhone X’s rear-camera earned 97 points from DxOMark, a leading source of independent image quality measurements and ratings for smartphone, camera, and lens, just behind the Google Pixel 2 with 98 points.
The front-facing camera features a 7-megapixel TrueDepth camera with f/2.2 aperture, and features face detection and HDR. It is capable of capturing 1080p video at 30 frames per second, or 720p video at 240 frames per second.
It also supports a fun new feature called Animoji that is exclusively available on the iPhone X. The front-facing TrueDepth camera captures and analyzes more than 50 different muscle movements, and then mirrors your expressions in any of 12 different Animoji. Some creative iPhone X users have used the feature to create lip-sync videos dubbed Animoji Karaoke, which was one of the trending topics on Twitter when it was launched.
It also supports Qi-standard wireless charging.
iPhone X Review and First Impressions
It has generally received positive reviews, though the high price of repair and the cost of the device have been raised as concerns.
