Oh look, random speculation from DigiTimes, hooray! The Taiwanese publication says “poor yields of fingerprint-recognition chips and LCD driver ICs” will force Apple to reduce the number of iPhone 5S units they’ll have available at launch. Now we know what you’re thinking, fingerprint technology? Yep, Apple bought a company back in July called AhthenTec for a hair over $350 million. Supposedly the iPhone 5S will have their technology inside, but to be perfectly frank, we think that’s total nonsense.
As for the LCD driver components, that could potentially be an issue, but again, how many reports have we been seeing about saturation of the high-end smartphone market? If Apple announces a budget iPhone during the same time they announce the 5S, they’ll have a bigger issue making sure they can supply units of that device rather than the more premium 5S.
But hey, we’re never going to know if any of this is true until Apple starts selling the next iPhones, and we don’t think that’s going to happen until late September or even October.
