Based on reader comments it looks like the various posts on iPhone jailbreaking, hacking, and unlocking for iPhone v1.1.1 has only resulted in confusing everyone, and I wouldn’t blame you, it has got me confused as well.
Unfortunately at this point of time things aren’t as easy as it was with iPhone firmware v1.0.2; however I have made an attempt to make it as simple as I possibly can for you to understand how to install the cool Installer.app (AppTap) application which in turn will let you install the unauthorized third-party applications on iPhone v1.1.1.
Before you proceed reading the article let me warn you (disclaimer) that the article below is based on information available on various websites on this topic, I haven’t tried any of these hacking procedures myself to confirm if these methods work one way or the other so you will be trying this at your own risk and hence I shouldn’t be held responsible in case it results in damaging your iPhone or voiding your warranty (though I think if you are reading this article you are already aware of it).
In order to install the Installer.app one of the requirements is to jailbreak your iPhone.
We have seen 3 methods of JailBreaking the iPhone which JailBreaking method should you use with iPhone OS v1.1.1?
The iPhone Dev Team had released their own method to jailbreak your iPhone OS v1.1.1. You are better of using this method one rather than the jailbreaking method post by iPhone hackers @ toc2rta who had released their jailbreak method that combines the symlink hack with a TIFF vulnerability found in the iPhone OS v1.1.1 firmware’s mobile Safari or the instructions published by iPhoneAlley to jailbreak the iPhone which was an early method of the iPhone Dev Team which was leaked by someone.

This method applicable for and recommendations?
It is applicable for all who have a working iPhone running on firmware(OS) v1.1.1.
It can be also applicable for all those who are currently on firmware v1.0.2 and have NOT unlocked their iPhone using any of the free unlocking methods and are on iPhone OS v1.0.2 to enjoy the third-party applications. However, do read the list of applications that are currently working with v1.1.1 before you decide to update the iPhone OS to v1.1.1.
This is also applicable for those who had also unlocked their iPhone using iPhoneSIMFree unlocking method but this is quite obvious as to unlock the iPhone you will need to anyways jailbreak your iPhone.
However, have mentioned who all it is applicable for I must add that this is definitely NOT for the faint hearted in fact some of the technically inclined folks have also found it difficult to follow the instructions published by the iPhone Dev Team so the recommendation would be to wait for the GUI based tool to jailbreak the iPhone OS v1.1.1 like say iFuntastic which we had for iPhone OS v1.0.2.
Any Warnings?
Do NOT use this process if you have unlocked your iPhone using any of the free unlocking methods like anySIM or iUnlock; the reason for this is “Apple has designed the 1.1.1 upgrade to permanently brick iPhones that have had their baseband modified to unlock the SIM".
Any tips from those who have tried it out?

Can I install Third-Party iPhone Applications after Jailbreaking iPhone OS v1.1.1?
Yes, the good news is you can install third-party iPhone hacks once you have jailbreaked your iPhone OS v1.1.1 however they are currently for those who have Mac OS X.
Before I provide the instructions, please do ensure that you have jailbreaked the iPhone using the above method and installed ssh tools. The instructions to install third-party iPhone applications are mentioned below courtesy iPhone Atlas.
- Install the Springboard patch patch to show third-party apps, click here for more details.
- Download AppTapp for Mac OS X and unzip it, but don’t launch it.
- Right-click (or hold the control key and click) on the AppTapp icon, then select “Show Package Contents” from the contextual menu.
- Drag the enclosed file “Installer” (this is actually the iPhone application, and its full name is Installer.app) to your /Applications folder.
- Open Terminal (located in /Applications/Utilities) and type the following: scp -r /Applications/Installer.app root@IPADDRESS:/Applications/ replacing IPADDRESS with the IP address of your iPhone (you can determine your iPhone’s IP Address by tapping Settings, then “Wi-Fi,” — tap the arrow next to the name of the Wi-Fi network to which your iPhone and look at the IP Address)
- Restart your iPhone.
You should see the Installer.app icon on the home screen. You can then follow the instructions below to install the third-party applications of your choice:
- Open the Installer application by tapping in the icon on your iPhone home screen.
- Before installing any new applications, update the Installer itself by clicking on the "Update" tab. If it doesn’t show anything, don’t worry. You are up to date.
When you start Installer you will see only a handful of applications. They are Nullriver’s apps, which include a BSD Subsystem and MobileTerminal. To access all third-party software available, do the following:
- Click on the Install tab now. It will connect to the Internet and register the available packages.
- Click on Community Resources package inside the Install tab.
- You will see the detail. Click on the Install button.
- After installing, you will see all the third-party applications currently available for iPhone (some of them are missing, however. Hopefully they will add them soon.)
- Go back to the Installer app, select any new app you want, hit the Install button and enjoy."

After installing Installer.app some users have reported that their iPhone shows reduced capacity, James Reid a reader @ iPhone Atlas has a solution to this problem:
"I figured it out. I had to delete the Media symbolic link and rename Mediabackup to Media using Mobile Finder. Now I have all my storage back."

Okay, so this leaves all those who had unlocked their iPhone using any of the free methods such as anySIM or iUnlock. What are your options?
Your only option currently is to wait as iPhone Dev Team to release their unlocking mechanism for iPhone OS v1.1.1. There is no point in restoring your baseband using iPhone "Elite" Team’s or iPhoneSIMFree’s solution since your first priority to upgrade to v1.1.1 would be to unlock the iPhone and have everything working fine and then install the third party iPhone applications.
In case you are not willing to wait the other option is to restore your basedband, upgrade to v1.1.1 and then use iPhoneSIMFree’s solution to unlock the iPhone OS 1.1.1; however do remember that their step-by-step tutorial again not for the faint hearted so I would recommend that you wait till they release a GUI based to achieve all that.
