LG today unveiled the G7 ThinQ, it’s latest flagship phone. Its the first phone from a renowned Android OEM to feature a notch display design at the front.
The G7 ThinQ features a 6.1-inch QHD+ display at the front with a 19.5:9 aspect ratio. Unlike the iPhone X, the notch on the G7 ThinQ can be turned off, and it can be even made to act as a secondary screen like how we have seen in previous LG V series smartphones. While the G7 still seems to be based on the V30 from last year, LG has made some improvements to ensure the handset is better able to compete with 2018 flagship handsets. LG G7 ThinQ: What Sets it Apart from the iPhone X
The notch can be disabled: The LG G7 does feature a notch display but unlike the iPhone X, it can be turned off. Even better, LG is using the notch part of the display in a unique way. It is making it act as a secondary display as seen in its previous V series of phones. On the iPhone X, you have to learn to live with the notch. There’s no way turn it off.
Boombox Speaker: The LG G7 might come with a single speaker at its bottom but it is far louder than the stereo speaker found on the iPhone X. This is because LG uses the internals of the G7 as a resonance box to improve the bass response and loudness. LG claims that the G7’s speaker is about 10 times louder than a regular smartphone, and if early hands-on of the handset are anything to go by, it certainly lives up to that claim. The sound quality can be further improved when one places the G7 on a hard surface like a table or wooden box.
Headphone jack: If you are an audiophile, you will love the LG G7. Not only does it feature a headphone jack, it also comes with a Hi-Fi DAC and DTS:X audio support to deliver an audio quality that cannot be rivaled by any other smartphone in the market.
Dedicated Google Assistant button: The LG G7 comes with a dedicated physical key that can be used to launch Google Assistant. There’s no denying the fact that Assistant is far superior to Siri, and the dedicated physical button just makes it easier to access Google’s assistant faster.
Fingerprint scanner: Apart from face unlock — which is not as secure as Apple’s Face ID, the LG G7 also comes with the good old fingerprint scanner.
Price: While LG did not announce the pricing of the G7 today, the handset is definitely going to be a fair bit cheaper than the iPhone X.
iPhone X: Where the LG G7 Falls Short Against Apple’s Offering
Face ID: Sure, the LG G7 comes with face unlock but it is simply not as secure as Apple’s Face ID. Apple’s face unlock mechanism is based on reading the depth information captured by the TrueDepth camera system, while the G7 solely relies on its 8MP front camera.
Superior Software Experience: LG’s software experience has always been one of its weak points, and that trend is going to likely continue with the G7. While the handset runs on Android 8.0 Oreo, the overall experience of using the phone will still be inferior to that of the iPhone X.
OLED Display: The LG G7 does come with a Super Bright display, but the iPhone X’s 5.8-inch OLED panel was crowned as the best smartphone display by Display Mate last year. The G7’s display might be good, but it is surely not going to surpass the OLED panel found on the iPhone X in terms of quality.
