We have seen several incidents of iPhones catching fire, with the most recent one that involved an iPhone 5c. Today, photos of a new incident have surfaced that involve the iPhone 5s catching fire.

From 9to5Mac:

[Today we got] images above from reader that just had a similar problem with his iPhone 5s.

We don’t know the source of the issue yet, but it looks like the majority of damage is originating from where the battery is located. Of note: The phone was apparently not charging or using any unauthorized accessories but we can’t verify.

The photos are quite terrifying, showing actual flames, a swollen up battery:

While the exact cause of the issue isn’t known, it’s likely that it was due to some sort of malfunction in the battery. Many such incidents are caused due to unauthorised accessories or replacement parts, but this device didn’t have any such components, nor was it being charged.
