One of the first fitness app to take advantage of the M7 motion coprocessor in the iPhone 5s has landed in the iOS App Store. This early adopter is Strava Run, a GPS tracker that logs your running performance and lets you compete against your friends.

The Strava app taps into the data available from the M7 and uses this information to detect when a runner starts or stops running. Because it uses a 3-axis accelerometer, compass and gyroscope, the M7 also limits the battery hit that often accompanies fitness apps. As Strava Run points out in its release notes, it can rely on the M7 and won’t have to turn on GPS that often to track a runner’s status.

Strava Run is the first of many fitness that’ll take advantage of the new M7 chip in the iPhone 5s. Nike is also working on its Nike+Move app that’ll utilize the motion data of the M7 chip. Unveiled during Apple’s September event, it’ll bring the NikeFuel platform to the iPhone 5s in a brand new way.

iPhone 5s owners looking to check out the first M7- compatible app can download Strava Run for free from the iOS App Store.
