As I am writing this post I have 10 different devices connected to the internet and not a single cord is needed. That is one of the greatest things about Wi-Fi, it gives me and my devices unfettered access to YouTube, Google images, and iPhonehacks.com. But when I leave the comfort of my home or office, the Wi-Fi connectivity doesn’t come along with me.

Instead, we are forced to locate free Wi-Fi spots offered at numerous retailers and public establishments, which takes time and effort. But you can easily locate free Wi-Fi networks and their passwords with ease.

Many argue that the internet should be a free service for everyone to enjoy. And while that may not be the case, you can use WifiMapper (iTunes link) to find local Wi-Fi hot spots, passwords, and locations around the globe. Start WifiMapper and allow the application to access your location. This of course is necessary to find available networks near you.

WiFiMapper - Start

Once your location is spotted, you will be shown the closest available networks in your surrounding area. If you are connected to WiFi, you will see your current network and you can add that location and password to the WifiMapper map. This would not be wise to do if you are on your home Wi-Fi network. By tapping on a location followed by the information icon, you can view the network name, scan the comments for the password, and also see reviews of the location added from FourSquare.

WifiMapper - Information

WifiMapper crowdsources passwords and available networks from users that have joined the WifiMapper community. In order to add networks and make comments, you will need to sign in with Facebook. However, if you simply want to view the networks in your area you do not need to log in into the service. You can also search for Wi-Fi networks all over the world. Just type in your desired location and you can plan out exactly where you need to go for free internet when traveling.

There are many applications that offer similar services like, Wi-Fi Map (iTunes link), Map Wifi (iTunes link), and OpenSignal (iTunes link) as well.
