In less than an hour from now, Apple will start rolling out the watchOS 5 update for all compatible Apple Watch out there. The update is going to be available as an OTA but if you want, you can always go ahead and manually update your Apple Watch to watchOS 5. Read this guide to know how.
Update to iOS 12 First
The first thing you need to do before installing the watchOS 5 update on your Apple Watch is to make sure the iPhone or iPad it is connected to is running iOS 12. Without installing the iOS 12 update on the companion iPhone, you will not be able to install watchOS 5 on your Apple Watch.
watchOS 5 Compatible Devices
watchOS 5 is compatible with all variants and versions of Apple Watch out there except for Series 0. So, if you are still using an original Apple Watch Series 0, you are out of luck here as your wearable has reached the end of its life.
How to Remove watchOS 5 Beta Profile
If you are running watchOS 5 Beta on your Apple Watch, you will first have to remove the beta profile from your device. Follow the steps below to know how
Step 1: On the Apple Watch app on your iPhone, head over to the My Watch tab followed by General -> Profile.
Step 2: All the installed profiles will be shown here. Simply select the profile you want to remove and follow it up by pressing the Delete Profile button.
How to Download and Install watchOS 5
Step 1: After updating your iPhone to iOS 12, connect it to a Wi-Fi network. Then proceed to open the Watch app on it.
Step 2: Tap the My Watch option at the bottom followed by General -> Software Update. You should see a new software update available for your Apple Watch.
Step 3: After going through the change-log, tap the Download and Install button and then tap Agree to accept the Terms and Conditions.
Step 4: On your Apple Watch, tap on Proceed and enter the passcode to continue.
Once your iPhone downloads the watchOS 5 update, it will be automatically transferred and installed on your Apple Watch. It is strongly recommended that you put your watch on charge while its downloading and installing the watchOS 5 update.
