Alongside the first developer beta of iOS 12, Apple also released the first developer beta of watchOS 5. Being a developer beta, it is not available for regular users, and it is currently limited to users who have a developer Apple account. Thankfully, just like you can install iOS 12 beta on your iPhone right away, there’s a trick to get the watchOS 5 beta on your Apple Watch as well.

The steps are pretty simple and only requires you to download and install a developer profile on your Apple Watch. However, before you can run watchOS 5 on your Apple Watch, you need to ensure that the paired iPhone is running iOS 12. Without your iPhone on iOS 12, you will not be able to install watchOS 5 on your Apple Watch as well.

Step 1: On your iPhone which is paired with your Apple Watch, head over to this link. You will have to use the ‘Slow Download’ option to download the file.

Step 2: As soon as the file is downloaded, you will get a popup asking where do you want to install the beta profile: your iPhone or Apple Watch? Select Apple Watch which would then lead to the Watch app opening. From there, tap on Install, proceed to enter the passcode or your iPhone and press install again to proceed with the installation procedure. In the end, you will have to restart your Apple Watch for the changes to take place.

Step 3: Once your Apple Watch restarts, proceed to use the Watch app to look for an update. If your iPhone is running iOS 12, you should automatically receive an OTA for watchOS 5 on your Apple Watch as well. If not, you will receive an error.

It is also important to note that if you ever consider downgrading your iPhone back to iOS 11, you will also have to downgrade your Apple Watch to watchOS 4.
