Both Safari and Chrome have this feature where if you go to a relatively popular news site like New York Times, you’ll get a popup asking if you want to enable push notifications for the site. If you allow them, you’ll get notifications for articles published on the site. Great. Well, the notifications from popular websites about new you might not care about is bad enough. But you can just say “Deny” and move on. These popovers though, persist.

And it looks like every major news site out there is using them. There is, of course, a way out. Buried in the Settings. But there is a way indeed.

How To Disable Push Notifications Popups In Safari

Step 1: In Safari on macOS, open the app, click on “Safari” in the menu bar and select “Preferences”.

Step 2: Click on the “Notifications” tab.

Step 3: From the bottom, uncheck the “Allow websites to ask for permission to send push notifications” option.

This will stop the popups that ask you to enable Push Notifications for a website.

Step 4: If you already have subscribed to some sites that you want to disable, click on the “Remove All” button.

How To Disable Push Notification Popups in Chrome

Step 1: In Chrome, click the three dotted menu button and select “Settings”.

Step 2: Scroll to the bottom and select “Show advanced settings”.

Step 3: From “Privacy”, select “Content settings”.

Step 4: You’ll now see the “Notifications” option. Here “Ask when a site wants to show notifications” is the default setting. To disable all push notification popups, select “Do not allow any site to show notifications”.

Step 5: You might want to disable notification access to any website you’ve graded it already. To do that, from the “Content settings” area, select “Manage exceptions”. Find the site in question and remove it.

Ah, there’s nothing like the bliss of nothing having notifications.
