Twitter rolled out a couple of new features for Direct Messages that includes showing the typing indicator whenever the other person is typing a reply as well as read receipts that allow you to see when the other person has read your messages and vice versa.

Currently, read receipts can only be viewed from Twitter’s iOS and Android apps. However, they will be sent even if you are using the web version.

By default, read receipts are enabled for every Twitter user and this can be a privacy concern for some. Luckily, there’s an easy way to switch it off so that the other person will not be notified when you read their messages. It also means that you will not be able to see read receipts from other people.

Enable or Disable Twitter Read Receipts from iOS

Step 1: Launch the Twitter app and switch to the Me tab.

Step 2: Tap on the gear icon located next to your profile picture and choose Settings.

Step 3: Go to Privacy and safety.

Step 4: In here, you should find a toggle for Send/Receive read receipts. Turn it on to enable read receipts or turn off to disable it.

That’s all you need to do to enable or disable Direct Messages read receipts in Twitter. It can be done either via iOS, Android or Twitter’s website but read receipts can only be viewed when you’re using the app.
