Using data from Sensor Tower, Business Insider has compiled a top 10 list of the most revenue generating apps in the App Store. The interesting list reveals that half of the top 10 revenue generating apps in the App Store were from Chinese firms like Baidu and Tencent Holdings.
The list is compiled based on the data collected by Sensor Tower until November 30, 2018 for worldwide downloads. This means that it is not just limited to App Store downloads from the United States. Below is the list along with the revenue generated by them. You will definitely be surprised by reading the name of the few apps mentioned below.
- 10. Hulu – $US132.6 million
- 9. QQ – $US159.7 million
- 8. Youku – $US192.9 million
- 7. Pandora – $US225.7 million
- 6. YouTube – $244,2 million
- 5. Kwai – $US264.5 million
- 4. iQiyi – $US420.5 million
- 3. Tinder – $US462.2 million
- 2. Tencent Video – $US490 million
- 1. Netflix – $US790.2 million
While Netflix was by far the highest revenue grossing app on the App Store, apps from Chinese internet giants like Tencent Video, iQiyi, QQ, and Youku are a complete surprise in this list. Combined, these apps have generated a total revenue of over 3.3 billion dollars, a share of which also goes to Apple. It is also important to note that almost all the apps in the list have a subscription-based model which means the user has to pay for them at regular intervals. No wonder revenue from the company’s services business is growing fast which Apple hopes will make up for the slowdown in iPhone sales.
