As a last-minute leak had claimed, Apple today announced at WWDC 2019 that it is renaming iOS for the iPad to iPadOS. The move is a surprising one

iPadOS 13 comes with a number of features and enhancements aimed at making the iPad Pro a better PC replacement.

Improved Home Screen

iPadOS comes with an improved home screen which allows one to pin their widgets on the home screen. The app icons also have a tighter grid positioning for a cleaner look.

Improved Multitasking 

iOS 13 brings about major improvements to multitasking on the iPad. In iOS 13, apps can have multiple windows and can contain sheets which can be pinned to a part of the screen. These cards can be moved around the display to allow for free-form multitasking and can be flung away when they need to be dismissed.

To make Split View multitasking easier, apps can have different color panels to make it easier for users to distinguish between them.

Multiple Instances of Same App

iPadOS 13 allows one to run multiple instances of the same app. This means you can have two Word files open side by side.

Enhanced Files App

The Files app in iPadOS is gaining support for iCloud Shared folders, SMB folders, external USB drives, and even cameras. Additionally, there’s a new Column view that’s going to be extremely handy in some cases.

Desktop-class Safari

Safari on iPadOS will load desktop versions of a website by default. Other new features include support for keyboard shortcuts, Download manager, and more.

App Expose

You can quickly see all the multiple instances of an app using App Expose similar to what one gets in macOS.

New Gestures

Lower Apple Pencil Latency

Apple is reducing the Apple Pencil latency with iPadOS from 20ms to 9ms.

PencilKit API

Apple is updating the Apple Pencil tool palette, and it is expanding it to third-party apps as well.

iPadOS drops later this year for iPad mini 4, 6th gen iPad, and all iPad Pro models.
