Alongside the iPhone 13 series, Apple also announced the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max. The Pro iPhones pack all the changes that the iPhone 13 series have in addition to some ‘pro’ new features.
The iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max feature a smaller 20 percent smaller notch at the front. The Ceramic Shield glass continues to do its duty to protect the OLED display. The phones are also IP68 dust and water-resistant. Like previous Pro iPhones, the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max feature a stainless steel band that’s resistant to abrasion and corrosion.
The iPhone 13 Pro series will be available in four new colors: Gold, Silver, Sierra Blue, and Grey.
The new Super Retina XDR displays on the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max features a peak brightness of 1,000 nits, up 25 percent from iPhone 12 Pro Max. While viewing HDR content, the display can go as high as 1,200 nits.
More importantly, the displays now support ProMotion to dynamically adjust their refresh rate from as low as 10Hz to 120Hz. Apple has also updated iOS to take advantage of the new display technology. This will help in delivering a smoother UI experience to users.
A15 Bionic
The iPhone 13 series is powered by a 5nm A15 Bionic chip, which is up to 50 percent faster than the competition. This is still a 6-core CPU packing four high-performance cores and two efficiency cores. Interestingly, Apple uses a 5-core GPU on the iPhone 13 Pro series, which brings about a 50 percent boost in performance. For comparison, the iPhone 13 features a 4-core GPU.
The 16-core Neural Engine is also faster than before, which should help speed up AI and ML tasks.
Improved Triple Cameras
Apple has completely revamped the camera setup on the iPhone 13 Pro series. The telephoto camera now offers 3x optical zoom and offers a 77mm focal length. The 12MP ultra-wide camera now features an f/1.8 aperture and a 6-element lens, which brings about a 92 percent improvement in low-light scenarios. It also features autofocus, thereby allowing for macro photography. The primary camera still features a 12MP resolution, but the sensor size is bigger than Apple even used on the iPhone 12 Pro Max.
All three camera sensors on the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro now feature Night mode support. Apple is also debuting new Photographic styles, which allows you to edit the photo in real-time as per your liking. There’s also Smart HDR 4 that delivers improved color, contrast, and lightning in group photos.
On the iPhone 13 Pro and Pro Max, Apple is further improving the Cinematic Video feature by taking advantage of the LiDAR sensor to change focus after shooting the video. Additionally, Apple is bringing ProRes video support to the iPhone 13 Pro series later this year. The phones will be capable of recording ProRes videos in 4K30fps resolution.
Better 5G Connectivity
The iPhone 13 Pro supports more 5G bands than before, allowing for better and wider 5G coverage. By the end of 2021, Apple claims that over 200 carriers in over 60 countries will support 5G on the iPhone.
Better Battery Life
Apple is using bigger batteries on the iPhone 13 Pro series to offer longer battery life. The iPhone 13 Pro will last 1.5 hours more than the iPhone 12 Pro, while the iPhone 13 Pro Max lasts 2.5 hours more than iPhone 12 Pro Max.
iPhone 13 Pro Price and Availability
The iPhone 13 Pro will be available for $999, with the iPhone 13 Pro Max available for $1,099. Apple is adding a new 1TB storage option for the iPhone 13 Pro series, though the base storage remains 128GB.
