If you own an iPhone and a Mac, you can sign into iMessage from your Mac so that messages can be sent and received right from your laptop. This eliminates the need of having your iPhone at all times to communicate.

While having iMessage on your Mac is useful, it might become annoying when you keep on receiving notifications of new messages. This can be an issue when you’re at work and don’t want to be disturbed. There are two ways in which you can solve this problem. You can either disable iMessage notifications permanently on your Mac or turn on Do Not Disturb mode so that you don’t receive any notifications at a specific time of the day. Here’s how you can do it.

How to Permanently Disable iMessage Notifications on Mac

Step 1: Click on the Apple logo in the menu bar and choose System Preferences.

Step 2: Go to Notifications.

Step 3: From the list of available apps, find and click on Messages.

Step 4: Choose ‘None’ for the Messages alert style.

After making this change, you’ll no longer receive any notifications from the Messages app, including new iMessage texts.

An alternative method is to enable Do Not Disturb mode whenever you don’t want to receive iMessage notifications. Here’s how to do it.

How to Turn on Do Not Disturb on Mac and Silence iMessage Notifications

Step 1: Open Notification Center.

Step 2: Go to the Today tab.

Step 3: Scroll to the top to view the Do Not Disturb toggle.

Step 4: Now toggle on Do Not Disturb.

By enabling Do Not Disturb mode, all banners and alerts will be hidden and notification sounds will be silenced. This is quite useful when you’re in the workplace and want to silence iMessage notifications temporarily.

You can also schedule Do Not Disturb mode to turn on at a specific time of the day. To do so, go to System Preferences > Notifications > Do Not Disturb and set your preferred time schedule.
