Apple just released iOS 8.4 alongside Apple Music, its highly anticipated streaming music service.

The sign up process for Apple Music was quite smooth. However, it looks like users are having a problem enabling iCloud Music Library.

I was also facing the problem on my iPhone 6 Plus. At the end of the sign up process I got an error message informing me that ‘iCloud Music Library can’t be enabled’.

You can enable it manually by going to the Music pane in the Settings app, there is a toggle to enable or disable iCloud Music Library.

When I tried to enable the toggle it gave me an option to either Merge or Replace. Since I have music on my iPhone 6 Plus, selecting merge should merge my local and cloud libraries whereas replace should replace the device’s library with the cloud library.

However, when I tried to select Merge or Replace, I got the error message again informing me that “iCloud Music Library can’t be enabled”. It means that the music that you save on your device from Apple Music won’t be available on your other iOS devices.

iCloud Library can't be enabled error

When I went to the iCloud pane in the Settings app, I got a prompt to accept the terms and conditions. Unfortunately, accepting the iCloud terms and conditions didn’t solve the problem.

Some blogs are reporting that selecting the Merge or Replace multiple times does the trick. But that didn’t work for me (nor did it make sense).

Here’s how to fix the ‘iCloud Music Library can’t be enabled’ error:

  • Go to iCloud in the Settings app.
  • Tap on your iCloud account at the top.
  • It will prompt you to enter the iCloud password.
  • Enter the password, and tap Done. It will verify and sign you into your iCloud account.
  • Now go back to the Music pane in the Settings app.
  • Tap on the toggle to enable iCloud Music Library.
  • Tap on Replace or Merge. It should work this time.
