You may have noticed that your Mac is automatically downloading macOS Sierra updates. Now, it’s not as bad as the U2 debacle. It won’t be installed automatically. And there’s a way to disable this feature.

You might be one of cautious bunch, the kind that doesn’t install new macOS updates till a couple of months in. And if your work depends on that machine, that totally makes sense. But your Mac is going to download the update (as long as you have enough disk space), and will keep bugging you about it. If you want to avoid that, read on.

Disable Auto Downloads

macOS Sierra update downloads the same way that updates to OS and apps automatically download. This is a feature you can turn it off (but remember, it will turn off auto downloads for everything in the App Store).

Step 1: Click the “Apple” icon from the menu bar and select “System Preferences”.

Step 2: Now select “App Store”.

Step 3: Now from here, uncheck “Download newly available updates in the background”. You’ll find this under the “Automatically check for updates” section.

This means your Mac will stop checking and downloading new updates.

Getting Rid of the Downloaded macOS Sierra File

If your Mac has already downloaded macOS Sierra, the installation file will be in the “Applications” folder. If you don’t plan on installing any time soon, or you think it’s taking too much space (it’s around 5GB), you can delete it.

From the Applications folder, find the file called “Install macOS Sierra.app”. Send this to the Trash, then empty the trash. You’re done.

Sierra Is worth Looking Into

I personally like Sierra for how smart it is when it comes to storage. Using the storage analysis tool and the Optimize Storage feature has made using the 128 GB MacBook Pro much easier.

Why haven’t you upgraded to Sierra yet? Whats’ holding you back? Share your reasons with us in the comments below.
