The iOS 10 Music app redesign, while much of an improvement, has left many eyebrows raised. From hiding the Up Next queue in a place no one can figure out, to the removal of star ratings and the “Add to Up Next” queue.
It’s that last one that’s got many iOS 10 upgraders confused. The feature has been replaced by two new line items – Play Next and Play Later.
How To Find These Options and The Up Next Queue
To find the Play Next and Play Later option, you’ll need to long press on a song, album or playlist. If you’re using an iPhone 6s or higher, you’ll need to 3D Touch.
Step 1: Open the Music app and find the song or album in question.
Step 2: Tap and hold on a song or an album to get the options menu.
Step 3: From here, select Play Next or Play Later.
If you’re in an album or list view, tap the “three dotted” menu button. To actually view the Up Next queue, you’ll need to swipe up on the Now Playing screen.
What Does Play Next Do
Play Next is simple. When you’re playing something already, or have a queue set up, selecting “Play Next” for a song from your Library will put it at the top of the Up Next queue.
Do this again and that song will now be the top of the list.
What Does Play Later Do
Inversely, “Play Later” puts the song or the album at the bottom of the Up Next queue.
Conceptually, it’s simple to understand. The problem is that the feature isn’t implemented correctly.
People have been reporting issues where the Play Later option just doesn’t show up.
If you’re shuffling your entire library or playing songs from “Downloaded Music” section, the “Play Later” option just won’t appear. It also won’t show up if you don’t have at least 1 song in the Up Next queue.
That’s because the Music app thinks that your entire library is in the queue anyway. This can be frustrating to people who don’t like to create playlists and instead want to create queues on the fly.
But this is what we’re stuck with so far. So if you want to use the Up Next feature, you’ll need to change how you use the queue a bit.
Instead of playing your entire library, try creating playlists (even if they’re really long). If you play a playlist, the Play Later option will appear.
