Chinese-language website Feng cites the Taiwanese media in a new report that claims the Apple Watch could launch at some point during the month of February. Apple has only confirmed that the smartwatch will launch “early next year,” with The Information reporting that the iPhone maker would be lucky to release the device by Valentine’s Day.
According to the report, the Apple Watch is likely to have a limited rollout when it is released due to supply shortages for sapphire crystal glass from manufacturing partner GT Advanced. It is important to note that the Apple Watch Sport collection does not use sapphire, so that model would be unaffected by a shortage of the highly-durable material.
The higher-end Apple Watch and Apple Watch Edition collections, which were recently shown off in public at a one-day event part of Paris Fashion Week, could be the models affected by this shortage. Apple uses sapphire crystal to protect the display of the Apple Watch, as the highly-durable glass has very thin properties and is virtually scratch-proof.
Apple also has to finalize the hardware and software aspects of the Apple Watch, which appears to be the most sophisticated and complex device that the Cupertino-based company has ever designed. The iPhone maker has also yet to release WatchKit for allowing developers to create third-party apps for the smartwatch.
It was reported earlier this week that Apple manufacturing partner Quanta Computer will begin mass production of the Apple Watch in January, so it is possible that Apple could have limited units of the device ready for shipment by February. It was originally speculated that mass production of the Apple Watch would begin in November.
Apple Watch starts at $349 and will be available early next year in the United States and several other launch countries. The smartwatch must be paired with an iPhone 5, iPhone 5c, iPhone 5s, iPhone 6 or iPhone 6 Plus over Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to function, and has several features including Digital Crown, Force Touch and a custom heart rate sensor.
