The Toronto Maple Leafs are set to go up against the Boston Bruins in the first round of the 2019 Stanley Cup Playoffs, which kick off this week. Ahead of the first puck drop, Apple is showcasing a new “Shot on iPhone XS” video presenting a behind-the-scenes look at two of the Maple Leafs’ stars, Mitch Marner and Auston Matthews.
Mitch Marner, a right winger for the Leafs, is the primary subject of the video. However, Auston Matthews, a center for the Leafs, is also present in the video as well, even as he serves as cinematographer for the majority of the behind-the-scenes look. We get to see the two as they practice, travel cities, work out, interact with people, and much more.
All of that is condensed into a video that’s just over 30 seconds. Here’s how Apple describes it:
“Auston Matthews, of the Toronto Maple Leafs, steps behind the camera to film his teammate, Mitch Marner. Get a peek behind the curtain into the lives of two of the biggest stars in the NHL.”
And here is the video:

Apple has worked with the National Hockey League in the past for its “Shot on iPhone” marketing campaign. Last year, “Selfies on iPhone X” included a variety of different star players from the NHL. And this year, “Shot in iPhone” saw different candid photos of NHL players from different teams across the league.
Our Take
This is a pretty cool video, especially for fans of hockey or these two star players in general. It’s definitely too brief. A longer version, and one with other players, would be a nice way to market the iPhone and it’s camera capabilities. This author might suggest a similar video for Patrice Bergeron and Brad Marchand of the Boston Bruins.
