Last year in October, Apple published its first research paper related to artificial intelligence and machine learning titled “Learning from Simulated and Unsupervised Images through Adversarial Training.” The research paper detailed how image recognition of an AI engine could be improved by using both real life and synthetic images.

The research paper was credited to Apple researchers Ashish Shrivastava, Tomas Pfister, Oncel Tuzel, Josh Susskind, Wenda Wang, and Russ Web.

The paper was accepted at the 2017 Conference on Computer Vision and Pattern Recognition (CVPR) and has ended up winning the highly acclaimed and prestigious “CVPR 2017 Best Paper Award” in the machine learning field. This is no small feat when you consider the fact that there were over 2,600 submissions for the award.

After being secretive of its machine learning techniques, Apple had a change of heart last year and decided to publish its research papers. This year, the company launched an Apple Machine Learning Journal where it regularly uploads new journal posts on various machine learning techniques.
