U2 - Songs of Innocence

When the September 9 media event came to a close, and Apple had officially unveiled their new products and service, the band U2 took the stage. Soon after, their album would become free — and present — on a lot of people’s iTunes library.

As a gift to iTunes users, Apple and U2 decided to release the band’s new album as a free download for anyone who wanted it. However, at the same time, Apple made it accessible for many users right from their iTunes library, with the album stored in the cloud. As one can imagine, not everyone likes U2, and the album’s presence didn’t necessarily sit well with them — even if it was free.

So, Apple has released a tool to remove the album for your iTunes library if you so choose:

  • Go to http://itunes.com/soi-remove.
  • Click Remove Album to confirm you’d like to remove the album from your account.
  • Sign in with the Apple ID and password you use to buy from the iTunes Store.
  • You’ll see a confirmation message that the album has been removed from your account.
  • If you downloaded the songs to iTunes on your Mac or PC or to the Music app on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, you’ll need to delete them manually.

If you haven’t picked up the album yet, and you do like U2, it will be free from iTunes until mid-October.

While the album is free for iTunes users, it certainly took a big change from Apple to make it all possible, with the bill rumored to be more than $100 million to land the deal.
