Disney+ and Apple TV+ had launched around the same time in November last year. Since then, while Apple TV+ has failed to click with customers, Disney+ has become massively popular due to its content library despite its limited availability. In fact, Disney+ has managed to garner over 50 million subscribers within just five months of its U.S. launch. So far, Disney+ is available in a handful of EU countries, the U.K., Australia, New Zealand, the United States, and India.
On its launch day itself, Disney+ had managed to gain over 10 million subscribers. The speed at which Disney+ is growing, it could very well surpass the subscriber count of Netflix — which stood at around 61 million in the United States at the end of 2019 — by next year. Worldwide, Netflix has around 167 million subscribers. The service has received a boost in its growth due to the COVID-19 outbreak which has forced millions of people to stay at home.
Disney+ does not offer a free streaming tier so all of these 50 million subscribers are paying for the service.
“We’re truly humbled that Disney+ is resonating with millions around the globr=e, and believe this bodes well for our continued expansion throughout Western Europe and into Japan and all of Latin America later this year,” said Kevin Mayer, Chairman of Walt Disney Direct-to-Consumer & International in a statement Wednesday.
In comparison to Disney+, Apple TV+ is nowhere to be seen. Apple is offering a year of free subscription to the service for all new iPhones, Mac, Apple TV, and iPad owners, but the lack of an expansive content library means that consumers just have not taken to the service. Disney+, in comparison, not only has an expansive content library, but it also has successful original programmings like The Mandalorian and many others in the pipeline.
