Apple just wrapped up the WWDC 2019 held at San Jose McEnery Convention Center. The keynote was packed with a new operating system, security features and a huge list of new additions. Apple also unveiled new hardware, the Mac Pro and the Pro Display XDR display stole the show with mind-numbing specifications and computing prowess.
In a nutshell, Apple unveiled iOS 13, watchOS, iPadOS, HomePod update, Mac Pro, Pro Display XDR, and MacOS Catalina. Let us take a closer look at each of the announcement and deduce one by one,
WatchOS 6: Noise app, Redesigned Watch Face, and Activity Trends
The WatchOS 6 comes with a bunch of new features including a Noise app. This app will measure the decibel level and warn you when the decibel level becomes potentially harmful. The company has also overhauled the watch faces to support complex data. Activity Trends show your progress over time and the Watch automatically gives you suggestions based on your fitness levels.
Other important upgrades include Voice Memo, infograph modular and Calculator. You can also control audiobook playback and track menstrual cycle on the WatchOS 6. And before we forget, the WatchOS 6 now gets a dedicated App Store.
tvOS 13: New interface, a renewed focus on content and gaming
Apple has updated tvOS with a new user interface, third-party controller support, and multiuser support. User switching will allow each user to have personalized content, just like a Netflix account can be shared with others to separate what you are watching. Furthermore, the tvOS increasingly focus on content personalization and leveraging the Arcade gaming service. The Apple TV will also now support the PS4 Dualshock controller and the Xbox One S.
iOS 13: Dark Mode and Faster App Launch Times
This time around Apple has heavily focussed on new features on the iOS 13. We have all been asking for a Dark Mode and finally, the good folks at Apple have heard our plea. The iOS 13 offers a dark mode across the Music app, Reminders, Apple Maps, and more. The Dark Mode can be enabled from the control center and you can also schedule it according to your preference.
The iOS 13 boasts of better performance. Apple claims that the iOS 13 is up to 30 percent faster and the developers have worked to shrink app size to half the original. Other novelties include Enhanced Messages App, Customizable Memoji, revamped Apple Maps and enhanced image editor.
iPad OS: iPad gets its own operating system!
Apple had us surprised after it renamed the iOS for iPad to iPadOS. The iPadOS 13 features Improved home screen with a provision to pin widgets. Apple has also worked on the Multitasking feature on the iPad. In iPadOS 13, apps can have multiple windows and can contain sheets which can be pinned to a part of the screen. These cards can be moved around the display to allow for free-form multitasking and can be flung away when they need to be dismissed.
Another important feature is that iPad OS lets you run multiple instances of the same app.
macOS 10.15 Catalina: iTunes showed the door, new anti-theft feature and more
macOS Catalina features a new Apple Music App, Podcasts app and Apple TV app that comes in as a replacement for iTunes. Needless to say, Apple has finally dealt a death blow to iTunes.
When compiling using Xcode, developers can now simply select “macOS” in their project settings to port their app to the desktop, and in many cases not even have to change a single line of code. This feature is also referred to as “Project Catalyst” or Marzipan. Using the Apple T2 security chip, macOS can now be deactivated remotely.
Mac Pro 2019 Refresh- The most powerful Mac by Apple
The new top-of-the-line Mac Pro 2019 sports an Intel Xeon with up to as much as 28 cores that get a whole 300 watts dedicated to them. The CPU will be accompanied by a “massive heatsink” for optimal thermal cooling.
The new Mac Pro can be upgraded to as much as 1.5 terabytes, that’s 1,500 gigabytes, of total system memory. That’s 1500GB of RAM. This is all thanks to the 6 memory channels that support up to 12 DIMM modules clocked at up to 2933MHz.
Apple Pro Display XDR: 6K Goodness in a 32-inch panel
The Apple Pro Display XDR is capable of 1000 nits of brightness with a peak of 1600 nit. As far as the contrast ratio is concerned, the display offers 1,000,000:1 contrast ratio. According to Apple, the latest Mac Pro can handle up to six Apple Pro Displays simultaneously!
Apple Pro Display XDR features sleek looking 9mm bezels and edge-to-edge display. The Pro Stand lets you rotate the screen and use it in portrait mode.
