While the Notes app looks the same in iOS 8, it has gained a couple of new features in iOS 8, bringing its features on par with its Mac counterpart. With the iOS 8 Notes app, you can now add bold, italic or underlined text, and also attach photos (including GIFs!) to notes.

Add Photos

The way to add photos to a note is similar to how you insert a photo in a mail compose window.

  • Open a new or existing note:

  • Tap and hold near the cursor to reveal the paste menu. You’ll see an option to Insert Photo.

  • Tap on Insert Photo to bring up the Photo picker. Navigate to the correct album, and pick the photo you want. Tap on Choose.

  • You should now see the photo inserted in the note.

You can insert multiple photos using the same technique.

GIFs

In addition to static photos, the Notes app also lets you insert GIFs from your Photo Library using the same process. To add GIFs to your photo library, just open any GIF in Safari and save it to Photos.

Rich Text

In addition to photos, you can now use rich text in your notes. So you can add emphasis using bold, italic and/or underlined text. Here’s how you do this:

  • Type in some text that you want to format.

  • Select the text, and tap on the arrow button on the right:

  • After tapping, you’ll see three new buttons for bold, italic and underlined text. To apply a style, tap on the button, and you’ll see the text updated.

If you use the Notes app on a regular basis, these features are quite useful, and don’t add a lot of complexity to the app. Let us know what you think of these changes in the comments below.
