Apple confirmed its September 9th press event last week, when it sent out invites to media outlets with a cryptic tagline that said “Wish we could say more”. The cryptic tagline in the invite suggests that Apple will finally deliver on its promise of entering new product categories this year, possibly with a wearable device.

The event will take place at 10:00 am Pacific Time at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts on the campus of De Anza College in Cupertino. The Flint Center holds a special place for Apple, as it was the location that Steve Jobs introduced the original Mac 30 years ago. The venue has a much higher capacity that other Apple venues. The Apple Campus Town Hall and Yerba Buena Center have a capacity of 301 and 757 respectively, but the Flint Center has a much higher capacity of 2405 people. Apple is also constructing a mysterious large building at Flint Center just for the event, making the choice of the venue even more noteworthy.

The event is turning out to become one of the most highly anticipated Apple event in the last few years, and here’s what we can expect from the event based on all the rumors and speculations we’ve heard so far.

iPhone 6

Apple will unveil the next-generation iPhone, dubbed the iPhone 6 at the event. The device is rumored to come in two variants, one with a 4.7-inch display and the other with an even larger 5.5-inch display. While it’s almost certain that Apple will unveil the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 on September 9th, some reports suggest that the larger 5.5-inch variant, dubbed iPhone 6L, might be delayed due to production issues.

There have been several rumored resolutions of the iPhone 6’s bigger display, but the most common amongst them has been 1334 x 750 for the 4.7-inch display, which translates to the same 326 ppi pixel density as the current iPhone.

The iPhone 6 is also expected to feature an NFC chip to power an Apple-backed mobile payments system, which will presumably work with Visa, MasterCard and American Express cards.

iOS 8

Apple introduced iOS 8 at WWDC in June with a whole bunch of new features like custom keyboards, widgets, share and photo extensions, HealthKit, interactive notifications, Family Sharing and a lot more.

iOS 8 will also contain changes to support the new NFC mobile payments service to be launched with the iPhone 6, which presumably will be integrated with the Passbook app.

iWatch

Along with the iPhone 6, Apple will reportedly also announce the iWatch, its widely-rumored wearable product. The device will come with a number of sensors to keep track of your health and fitness, and feed data into iOS 8’s new HealthKit framework. It will have a curved, flexible OLED display, and will be available in two sizes, 1.3-inch and 1.5-inch.

Rumors suggest the device will run iOS, and will support existing features like Siri, Handoff etc. It’ll have 512MB or RAM and 8GB of storage, but its battery will reportedly last for a short duration, which could be a concern.

iPad Air 2

Apple has traditionally held separate events for iPhone and iPad, but reports claim that this year, the iPad Air 2 will be launched alongside the iPhone 6. The device will likely come in three colors, including a gold option, anti-reflective coating, minor design changes, Touch ID and of course a faster chip.

The improvements aren’t substantial over the current generation iPad Air, which is why we’re guessing Apple could club the announcement into the September 9th event.
