iOS 6 Maps

While iPhone 3GS (launched in 2009) and iPhone 4 (launched in 2010) are compatible with iOS 6 – Apple’s latest mobile operating system, some features such as turn-by-turn voice navigation and 3D Flyover feature are not available in Apple’s new Maps app.

There have been mixed reviews about the iOS 6 Maps app, while Apple has been heavily criticized for it and even forced Tim Cook to write an open letter to customers apologizing for the Maps fiasco, there have been quite a few readers who seem to be quite happy with it.

The good news is that if you want the turn-by-turn voice navigation and 3D Flyover feature on your iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS then Ryan Petrich – popular jailbreak developer has released a jailbreak tweak on Cydia that enables these features in iOS 6 Maps app.

Petrich has aptly called he jailbreak tweak Unlock iOS6 Maps. After installing the jailbreak tweak it automagically enables 3D Flyover Maps and turn-by-turn navigation in the Maps app on iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS.

Here are the simple steps to enable the features on your jailbroken iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS on iOS 6:

  • Launch Cydia app
  • Tap on the Search tab at the bottom.
  • Search for Unlock iOS6 Maps and select it from the search results.
  • Tap on the Install button at the top right corner.
  • Then tap on the Confirm button.
  • After it is successfully installed tap on the Restart SpringBoard button.

That’s it, after the SpringBoard restarts, you will be able to launch the iOS 6 Maps app and use the turn-by-turn navigation and 3D Flyover Maps feature. Petrich points out that it could reduce performance of your device.

So check it out on your iPhone 4 and iPhone 3GS and let us know what you think.
