iOS 10 comes with exciting new features that gives users a solid reason to upgrade their devices. It will be released today at 10 AM PST/1 PM EST and an OTA update should be available for supported devices.

However, those who have installed iOS 10 beta or the GM version are confused as to whether they will get the OTA update or not. In this post, I will clear up all the confusions that you have as well as explain how you can go from the beta/GM version to the final iOS 10 firmware.

Should you update iOS 10 GM or Beta to final iOS 10 version?

Golden Master (GM) is the final build of a firmware before it is released to the public. The iOS 10 GM released just a few days back comes with build number 14A403.

The final version of iOS 10 that is going to be released today will most likely have the same build number as iOS 10 GM. However, if Apple has identified any critical bug in the GM version, then they will most likely patch it in the final iOS 10 version and give it a different build number.

Therefore, if tomorrow’s release has a different build number than 14A403 then you will have to update. However, if the build number is the same as 14A403, then you don’t have to do anything. It essentially means that you have the same software installed as the final iOS 10 version.

If you’re on iOS 10 public beta 7 or lower then I’d recommended that you update to the final iOS 10 version, which is more stable. This also applies to developers who have iOS 10 beta 8 or lower installed.

How to update iOS 10 GM or Beta to final iOS 10 version?

To update iOS 10 beta or iOS 10 GM to the final iOS 10 version, there are multiple methods. If one of them doesn’t work then you can try the alternative methods listed.

Method 1: OTA Update

As mentioned earlier, if you’ve installed iOS 10 GM and the build number is the same as today’s iOS 10 release, then you don’t need to update. If the build number differs, then you can perform an OTA update.

Those who have installed the beta version of iOS 10 will also get an OTA update. Go to Settings ->  General -> Software Update and you should see a pending software update for iOS 10. Go ahead and download the firmware. Once done, install it on your device.

If you don’t see the OTA update then read the next method below.

Method 2: Remove iOS Beta Profile

Step 1: Go to Settings -> General.

Step 2: Scroll to the end of the page and you should find Profiles. Tap on it to open.

Step 3: Choose iOS Beta Software Profile.

Step 4: Tap on the Delete Profile button, then enter the device passcode, and confirm that you want to remove the profile from your device.

Step 5: Perform a hard reset by holding down the Lock/Wake and Home buttons together until your device restarts and you see the Apple logo.

Step 6: Next, unlock your device, go to Settings -> General -> Software Update and you should see the update.

Method 3: Update via iTunes

As a last resort, if none of the above methods work then you can put your device into Recovery Mode and update via iTunes.

Step 1: Connect your device to iTunes.

Step 2: While your device is connected, force it to restart. Press and hold the Lock/Wake and Home buttons at the same time. Don’t release when you see the Apple logo. Keep holding until you see the Recovery Mode screen.

Step 3: Once you’ve entered Recovery Mode, iTunes should display a message that you can update. Choose Update to download and install the latest iOS 10 version.

Jailbreakers

If you’ve jailbroken your iOS device, then you won’t be able to install the OTA update for iOS 10. You will get the “Checking for Update..” message when you go to General > Software Update in Settings.

Most modern jailbreak tools disable OTA updates so that you don’t accidentally install it. You will have to update your iOS device to iOS 10 by plugging your device to your computer and restoring via iTunes. Please remember that you will end up losing the jailbreak and your favorite jailbreak tweaks when you install iOS 10.

Update:

The build number of the final version of iOS 10 is also 14A403, so it is the same version as iOS 10 GM. So as mentioned above, you don’t need to do anything.
