You can do so much with the new Lock screen in iOS 10 – view messages, reply to them, view information from widgets and even interact with them. But you might be someone who doesn’t want to have all this access, especially if you keep your phone lying around – anyone could end up replying to your messages.
If you want to lock the Lock screen down, take the steps below.
1. Disable Notifications
If there’s no smoke, there’s no fire. iOS 10 lets you customize what notifications you see on the Lock screen on a per app basis.
Step 1: Oen the “Settings” app and go to “Notifications” section.
Step 2: Select an app you want to disable notifications for.
Step 3: Here you’ll find a toggle for “Show on Lock Screen“. Disable it and you’ll no longer get notifications from these apps on the Lock screen.
They’ll still be there in the Notification Center, along with the badges.
2. Disable Message Contents in Notifications
If you don’t want to go about disabling notifications for apps like Messages, WhatsApp or Facebook Messenger, the next best thing that you can do is disable message content.
Once you do that, you’ll be able to get notification that you’ve got a message from x person, but the content of the message will be hidden.
You’ll need to do this on a per-app basis. Here are the instructions for the 3 popular apps.
- Messages: Open the “Settings” app and go to “Notifications“. Find the Messages app, scroll way down and you’ll see a toggle for “Show Previews“. Turn it off.
- WhatsApp: Open the app, and tap on the “Settings” tab. Then select “Notifications” and turn off the “Show Preview” toggle.
- Facebook Messenger: Open the app, go to the “Me” tab, tap on “Notifications” and toggle off the “Show Previews” option.
#3. Disable Reply With Message
You can also just disable the feature that lets you reply from the Lock screen. You can only do this on a device that has Touch ID.
Step 1: Open the Settings app.
Step 2: Select “Touch ID and Passcode“.
Step 3: Toggle off “Reply with Message“.
#4. Disable Widgets, Notifications, Siri, Home Control, and Wallet
We’re here to lock everything down. And you can do that.
From the same “Touch ID and Passcode” section, you’ll see the following toggles in the “Allow Access When Locked” section.
- Today View (this is the widgets area)
- Notification Center
- Siri
- Reply With Message (we talked about it above)
- Home Control (the pane that lets you control your home automation devices in c Control Center)
- Wallet (This disables Apple Pay as well)
If you want to disable everything here, just tap on all the toggles.
Lock Screen – Detoxed
You’ve not successfully detoxed your Lock screen. I personally am loving the ability to reply to notifications and manage tasks right from the Lock screen.
