Apple Music makes it global debut on June 30th starting at 8 AM PST with Beats 1 going live an hour later at 9 AM PST. The service will be available on iOS devices, the Apple Watch, the Mac and PCs at launch. Here’s how to sign up and get started when the service goes live.
Download the necessary iOS or iTunes updates
Apple Music will be available via iTunes on the desktop and the new Music app on iOS and WatchOS. Before you can sign up for the service, you need to update your devices with the latest versions of iTunes, iOS and WatchOS that contain the Apple Music service. Apple will be releasing iOS 8.4 and new versions of iTunes starting at 8 AM PST on June 30th.
To install the latest iOS update, you need to open the Settings app, go to General and select “Software Update.” The phone will reach out to Apple’s servers and look for a new update. When an update is detected, you can follow the prompts to download and install it. To ensure the install goes smoothly, you should plug your device into a power source and connect it to a WiFi connection.
On the desktop, you will need to open iTunes and check for an update by opening iTunes > Check for Updates. The app will check for an update and prompt you to download it if one is available.
Launch the Music App or iTunes
Once the iOS 8.4 or iTunes update has been applied, you can access Apple Music by opening the new Music app on iOS or iTunes on the desktop. On iOS, Apple Music Radio and Beats 1 will be accessible in the music app where you will be able to sign up for the service. You will be prompted to join Apple Music by starting your free three-month trial. If you agree, the app will allow you to choose either an individual membership for $9.99 plan or a family plan for $14.99. The family plan uses family sharing which must be configured for your account in order for you to use this option. Once you select your plan, you only need to agree to the terms and conditions to get started with the service.
Why you should check out Apple Music
Apple Music’s biggest advantage is its integration into iOS and iTunes. You don’t need another account and don’t have to download new software to access the service. You can pay for it using the existing Apple ID payment options you use to purchase apps and other iTunes media. It also works seamlessly with your existing iTunes library, allowing you to listen to your songs and the Apple Music catalog while on the go.
Since Apple Music includes a free three-month trial, there is no reason not to check it out. You can sign up and use it to see if you like it. If you don’t like Apple Music, just remember to cancel the service before the three months are up so you won’t be charged.
