iOS 11 brings another update to the Lock screen and Notification Center. Apple has decided to merge Lock screen and Notification Center into a single entity called the Cover Sheet.
When you swipe down in an app, you’ll basically see the Lock screen. You’ll still be able to get to all your notifications.
How to Interact With Notifications in Lock screen
Now that Notification Center is merged with the Lock screen, swiping down from the top edge of the screen on the Lock screen does nothing.
If you want to view past notifications that are no longer on the Lock screen, you swipe up in the middle of the screen now.
Other than that, things are the same. 3D Touch on a notification to bring up contextual options (this now works on the iPad as well).
Swipe left on a notification to reveal options like View and Clear.
Swipe right on the notification and you’ll see a new Open button. You can either tap on it or swipe all the way to the right to open the app.
Tapping on the notification still opens the app.
And when you try to open a notification when your phone is locked, you’ll get a new full-screen view that asks you to either enter your passcode or can your finger using Touch ID.
How to Use The New Notification Center
When you swipe down from the top when in an app, you’ll be sliding down the Lock screen on top of what you’re viewing.
You’ll see all your notifications here. Swiping right will bring up Today View widgets. What’s new is that because this is the Lock screen, swiping right opens the Camera.
Also, you’ll see the time and the Now Playing widget in the Notification Center now.
Interacting with notifications is still the same.
Hide Notification Previews for All Messages
This is a new feature in iOS 11. It allows you to disable notification message previews for all apps installed on your device. You can choose to hide them all the time, or only when the device is locked.
Step 1: Open the Settings app and go to Notifications.
Step 2: Select Show Previews.
Step 3: From here, either select When Unlocked or Never.
You can also hide previews on a per-app basis. Select an app from the Notifications section and tap on Show Previews section from the bottom.
New Persistent Notification Design
Apple has changed how persistent notifications show up in iOS 11. Instead of an alert box in the middle of the screen, persistent notifications now look like any other banner notifications that show up at the top of the screen.
The only change is that they’ll stay there until you take action.
If you want to turn on persistent notifications for an app, select the app from Notifications section and after enabling Show as Banners toggle, switch to Persistent.
Hide Notifications from History
Let’s say you want to see a notification just on the Lock screen. You don’t want it to show up in the Notification Center.
You can disable the Show in History toggle in the app’s notification settings to go that.
