iOS 10 No Longer Lets You Open Settings Shortcuts from Widgets

Launcher widget is no stranger to controversy. With iOS 8 and the introduction of Notification Center widgets, Apple basically used the app to set an example of what happens when a developer tries to do things that Apple never envisioned or thought through. Luckily, the developer fought, the Apple community rallied behind him and we got the app back.

In iOS 10, Apple is doing something similar for Launcher, if not as drastic. Instead of banning the app for interacting with system level functions, Apple has outright disabled the ability to launch certain stock apps.

If you’ve upgraded to iOS 10 and previously had shortcuts set up for apps like Settings, Clock, Weather, Contacts, iCloud Drive, Voice Memos, and the Phone app, they will no longer work.

While you can’t launch the Phone app, you are still able to set up shortcuts for calling people.

Settings, though, is a different story. If you liked to use a shortcut for Cellular Data from the Launcher widget, that’s no longer available (for this instance, you can 3D Touch the Settings icon to get Cellular Data option).

It’s already been a couple of weeks since iOS 10 launched, but the developer is hopeful that maybe Apple will reverse the decision. If you want to help him out, you can send the feedback to Apple (more on that here).
