The last few days have been quite eventful for the jailbreak community. We got two iOS 11.4.1 jailbreaks (Electra and Unc0ver), which makes all versions of the iOS 11 software update jailbreakable. Security Researchers and hackers have also released an exploit for iOS 12 – iOS 12.1.2 and developer only iOS 12.1.2 – iOS 12 jailbreak.

So one of the most frequently asked questions is should you upgrade to the latest iOS version?

One of the golden rules of jailbreaking is to stay where you are to improve your chances of a jailbreak. So based on it we take a look at whether you should upgrade to the latest iOS software update.

What we know about iOS 12 Jailbreak

Over the last few weeks, quite a few iOS 12 exploits have been released raising hopes of a possible iOS 12 jailbreak. Ian Beer of Google’s Project Zero team has also published an iOS 12 exploit. Ian Beer’s exploit was used to develop the first iOS 11 jailbreak so it has certainly got us excited.

Like with other iOS 12 exploits published recently, this one too is only applicable for iOS 12.1.2 and lower. Apple has fixed this exploit in iOS 12.1.3 so if a jailbreak is released using the exploits released so far, it will support iOS 12 – iOS 12.1.2.

Which iOS version is Running on Your iPhone or iPad?

A decision to upgrade or downgrade depends on which version of iOS is running on your iPhone or iPad.

iOS 12.1.3

If you’re on iOS 12.1.3 or iOS 12.2 beta, then you should downgrade to iOS 12.1.2 or iOS 12.1.1 before Apple stops signing iOS 12.1.2 or iOS 12.1.1. Apple is expected to release iOS 12.1.4 this week to fix the serious security bug in FaceTime, so we expect Apple to stop signing iOS 12.1.2 or iOS 12.1.2 this week.

iOS 12.1.2 – iOS 12.1.1

If you’re on iOS 12.1.2 or iOS 12.1.1 then you should avoid upgrading as the iOS 12 jailbreak will most likely support iOS 12.1.2 or iOS 12.1.1.

iOS 12, iOS 12.0.1, iOS 12.1

If you’re on iOS 12, iOS 12.0.1, iOS 12.1, then it is up to you. You shouldn’t upgrade to iOS 12.1.3 but you can upgrade to iOS 12.1.2 or iOS 12.1.1. It is up to you as there is no harm in staying on iOS 12, iOS 12.0.1, iOS 12.1.

iOS 11 – iOS 11.4.1

While it is tempting to upgrade to iOS 12.1.2 or iOS 12.1.1, we would still recommend to stick to iOS 11 – iOS 11.4.1 especially if you have already jailbroken your iPhone or iPad using Electra Jailbreak or Unc0ver jailbreak.

Based on the golden rule, itt is recommended to avoid upgrading until the iOS 12 jailbreak is released and is stable. However, it is a tricky one especially since it is possible that the signing window may be closed soon. So it is up to you if you want to take the gamble and risk your jailbreak.

iOS 10 – iOS 10.3.1/iOS 9 – iOS 9.3.5

The same is applicable for users on iOS 10 – iOS 10.3.1.

Based on the golden rule, it is recommended to avoid upgrading until the iOS 12 jailbreak is released and is stable. However, it is a tricky one especially since it is possible that the signing window may be closed soon. So it is up to you if you want to take the gamble and risk your jailbreak.

How do I Upgrade or Downgrade?

However, please note that you can’t upgrade or downgrade manually using iTunes in the latest macOS beta.

When Will Apple Stop Signing iOS 12.1.2 or iOS 12.1.1?

It is anybody’s guess, but we expect Apple to stop signing it as soon as the next iOS 12 software update is released. We expect Apple to release iOS 12.1.4 before releasing iOS 12.2 to fix the serious FaceTime bug this week or next week. So Apple may stop signing iOS 12.1.2 or iOS 12.1.1 firmware files as soon as iOS 12.1.4 is released.

What will I miss if I Downgrade to iOS 12.1.2 or iOS 12.1.1?

Here’s the list of new features and improvements in iOS 12.1.3:

• Fixes an issue in Messages that could impact scrolling through photos in the Details view
• Addresses an issue where photos could have striped artifacts after being sent from the Share Sheet
• Fixes an issue that may cause audio distortion when using external audio input devices on iPad Pro (2018)
• Resolves an issue that could cause certain CarPlay systems to disconnect from iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max

In addition to these features, it looks like Apple’s Smart Battery case doesn’t work properly with the iPhone X in iOS 12.1.2. The issue seems to have been fixed in iOS 12.1.3.

It is also important to note here that references in iOS 12.2 beta which suggest that Apple may launch the next generation AirPods dubbed AirPods 2 soon, which will support the Hey Siri feature.

When Will iOS 12.1.2 – iOS 12 Jailbreak Tool Be Released?

Security researchers have released exploits for iOS 12 – iOS 12.1.2. It however will need some time and effort in developing the jailbreak tool for iOS 12 – iOS 12.1.2.

Developer @GeoSn0w has released a developer-only iOS 12 – iOS 12.1.2 jailbreak and Jake James has released rootlessJB 3.0 with iOS 12 support. The Pwn20wnd team has already released unc0ver jailbreak which adds partial support for iOS 12 for setting a boot nonce and disabling auto updates on some devices.

What Should I do to Prepare for iOS 12.1.2 – iOS 12 Jailbreak?

You should do the following things to prepare for the jailbreak:

• You should decide to upgrade or downgrade to iOS 12.1.2 or iOS 12.1.1 while Apple is still signing the IPSW firmware files.
• You should also save iOS 12.1.2/iOS 12.1.1 SHSH blobs so you can downgrade back to jailbreakable version of iOS using tools like futurerestore.

Fake news is not just affecting elections, the jailbreak community is also being targeted with fake jailbreaks. We are already seeing articles and YouTube videos which claim to jailbreak iOS 12. Any site claiming to have an iOS 12 jailbreak is a scam, so stay clear from such scam sites and tools as they can also potentially install malware on your iOS device.
