As the one-year anniversary of the public release of iOS 7 approaches, the adoption rate for the latest software version continues to rise. The latest App Store distribution numbers reveal that 90% of devices are now running iOS 7 based on a 7-day period ending July 13th. Meanwhile, 9% of devices continue to run iOS 6 and around the remaining 2% are running earlier versions. 

That every 9 in 10 devices is running iOS 7 just ten months after it was publicly released is rather impressive, especially given that only 17.9% of Android devices are running the latest KitKat version after ten months. The majority of Android devices are still running Jelly Bean, which is still installed on over half of all smartphones and tablets. Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich retains 11.6% adoption.

Apple benefits from exercising full control over its software updates, offered both over-the-air and as direct downloads on iTunes. It also has only a handful of iPhones, iPads and iPods in its product lineup, whereas there are thousands of Android devices. Google often struggles with fragmentation because of the difficulties in distributing software updates across several carriers, handset makers and devices.

iOS 8 was unveiled last month with several intuitive features, such as third-party keyboard support and widgets. Those features could help Apple drive strong adoption of its latest software version, which is expected to be released to the public in September. iOS 8 should come pre-installed on the oft-rumored iPhone 6, alongside new iPads and potentially even a stripped-down version for the so-called “iWatch.”
