Jailbreak iOS 8.4.1

Ever since iOS 8.4.1 has been released, we have got a lot of comments and email asking us if it is possible to jailbreak iOS 8.4.1. So we thought we will recap the current status of the iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak.

The short answer to the above question is “No, it is not possible to jailbreak iOS 8.4.1 currently”.

Why can’t I jailbreak iOS 8.4.1?

It is not possible to jailbreak iOS 8.4.1 using the TaiG jailbreak or PP Jailbreak tool that worked with iOS 8.4 – iOS 8.1.3 as Apple has patched several exploits used by the TaiG team in their jailbreak tool.

Will I be able to jailbreak iOS 8.4.1 in the future?

The good news is that the Pangu team has demonstrated an iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak recently. However, it is highly unlikely that they will release the jailbreak to the public at least until iOS 9 is released.

It doesn’t make sense to release a jailbreak for iOS 8.4.1 with iOS 9 just around the corner. We’re also assuming that since Pangu Team hasn’t released the jailbreak, it is quite possible that the exploits used for the iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak haven’t been patched in iOS 9.

Can I downgrade to iOS 8.4 and jailbreak my iOS device?

Apple has also stopped signing iOS 8.4 firmware file, so you can no longer downgrade from iOS 8.4.1 to iOS 8.4. Apple uses this strategy to keep jailbreakers at bay. It not only releases new software updates, that fixes the vulnerabilities used by the jailbreaks, it also stops signing the older iOS firmware file, which prevents users from downgrading back to the older iOS version that can be jailbroken.

So what next?

If you’re on iOS 8.4.1, then I guess all you can do is wait. If the exploits used in the iOS 8.4.1 jailbreak can be used to jailbreak iOS 9, then that would be great, Pangu team will be able to release a jailbreak after it is iOS 9 is released, which should also work with iOS 8.4.1. We expect Apple to release iOS 9 on September 16, a couple of days before iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus goes on sale. In which case, you can update to iOS 9 directly, and jailbreak your device.

If Apple has patched some or all the exploits in iOS 9, then Pangu team will release a jailbreak for iOS 8.4.1.

If you’re on iOS 8.4 or lower then you can still use TaiG jailbreak to jailbreak your iPhone, iPad or iPod touch. If you’ve jailbroken your device on iOS 8.4 or lower, then check out some of the things you must know.
