When iOS 12 was first released, a comparison with previous iOS releases highlighted the performance improvements brought about by the latest release of the OS. Now that a few months have passed and Apple has released quite a few major and minor updates to iOS 12, how does it compare to older versions of the OS performance wise?
YouTuber iAppleBytes has conducted a speed test between iOS 9.3.5, iOS 10.3.3, iOS 11.4.1, and iOS 12.1.3 on an iPhone 5s, iPhone 6, and iPhone 6s to answer that question.
The results are not that surprising and pretty much in line with what we saw when iOS 12 first came out. iOS 12.1.3 is definitely faster than iOS 11 and brings about the same level of performance as iOS 9.3.5 and iOS 10.3.3.
In some tests, the older version of the iOS performs better, while in certain other tasks, the iPhones running iOS 12.1.3 perform better.
Apple focused primarily on performance improvements with iOS 12 and the hard work paid off. What’s even more impressive is that Apple has ensured the performance level does not take a beating even after multiple updates to the OS like it did with iOS 11.
iOS 13 is likely going to bring about a certain degree of performance regression since it is expected to come with major new features. Even if the performance hit is not that major, I do expect Apple to drop support for the iPhone 5s because its chipset simply won’t be powerful enough for most of the new features that Apple introduces which rumor includes a redesigned home screen and more.
