iPhone 3G and AT&T

AT&T posted their third quarter earnings that were highlighted by strong wireless gains thanks to 2.4 million Apple’s iPhone 3G activations of which
approximately 40 percent of them were new wireless AT&T customers.

Apple had reported yesterday that they had blown past their own targets of 10 million iPhone sales thanks to a superb quarter where they sold 6.9 million iPhones.

You can checkout some of the highlights of AT&T’s quarterly results related to the iPhone after the jump.

AT&T reported that they saw 2.4 million iPhone activations of which
approximately 40 percent of them were new wireless AT&T customers which amounts to nearly 1 million new customers.

AT&T also reported that the impact of subsidizing iPhone 3G and other related network upgrades resulted in a reduced pretax third-quarter earnings by approximately $900 million.

However, AT&T is optimistic regarding continued strong iPhone 3G activations and is confident in the long-term value created by this investment in acquiring high-value, data-centric wireless subscribers.

Randall Stephenson, AT&T chairman and chief executive
officer had this to say about the iPhone effect on AT&T’s results:

"I am particularly pleased with the customer response to the iPhone
3G, the new customers we’re winning are high-value, with
attractive revenue and churn profiles. We’re expanding the market, as
users adopt more data and media-rich services and access a wide array
of applications. These achievements are positive for the future of our
business."
