Every single app that can create an iMessage extension for their app is creating one. It can be adorable stickers for their game characters or an ill thought out extension of their product that doesn’t really make sense. The problem is that when you automatically update all your apps after installing iOS 10, all these iMessage apps get added to your iMessage app drawer, automatically. And that can be annoying at best and could slow down the Messages app at the worst.

So what can you do? You can disable the toggle that automatically installs all iMessage apps for any downloaded or updated app.

How To Disable Auto iMessage App Installs

Now we tackle the auto install problem.

Step 1: Open the iMessage conversation and tap the “Apps” icon next to the “iMessage” text box. (if you’ve got the keyboard open, you’ll need to tap on the “right arrow” button first).

Step 2: From the same page where you see a grid of all the installed app, you’ll see the “Store” icon. It’s the first item on the first page. Tap on it.

Step 2: This will open the iMessage App Store. You’ll currently be in the “Featured” Tab. From the top, tap on the “Manage” tab.

Step 3: From the top here, tap on the toggle next to the “Automatically Add Apps” option to disable it.

From this screen, you’ll also see a list of all the available iMessage apps. You can enable/disable them based on your needs.

Now, when you download any app, the iMessage app won’t be installed automatically.

Does It Make Things Harder? Yes.

The next time you actually want to install an iMessage app and use it, you’ll have to first go in the “Manage” tab, find the listing from the “All” section and enable it.

Is that annoying? Yes. More annoying than seeing 5 new iMessage apps every morning after your iPhone ran the app updates the night before? Hell no.
