Apple today released the first beta of iOS 12. While the developer beta is meant for developers, the first public beta of the OS is also expected to come with plenty of new features. iOS 12 comes with plenty of new features which makes the wait until its final release in September pretty agonizing.

While you can always install the iOS 12 beta on your iPhone or iPad right away, you ideally should not. Remember that we are still talking about a beta build here — and the first one at that, which is bound to be ridden with bugs and plenty of issues. If you want even more reasons as to why you should not install the iOS 12 beta on your iPhone or iPad, read below.

1. Buggy

As mentioned above, Apple has just released the first beta of iOS 12. The final release of the OS is still more than three months away. This clearly shows that Apple still has a lot of work left to do on iOS 12. Bugs on iOS 12 beta can range from your iPhone or iPad randomly crashing to some features straight up not working.

Future beta iOS 12 releases are bound to be more stable so you should wait until at least a couple of beta releases from Apple are out before installing it on your iPhone or iPad.

2. Lack of Support

You won’t get help or support from either the developer or Apple for the problems you face with iOS 12 beta. Developers will tell you to wait for the final version of the oS and Apple will tell you to wait for the next beta version for the fix. Even developers don’t install beta versions on their primary devices. They usually have devices especially for testing their apps on beta versions of iOS.

3. Lack of Optimisations

Apple says that iOS 12 will come with a number of performance improvements. And while that might be true for the final release of the OS, its unlikely to be true for the first beta. If anything, you might notice a decline in performance on your iPhone or iPad after installing the first beta of iOS 12. The code base of the OS is still new and it will take time for Apple to optimize it for its various devices. And even if you notice any performance improvements, it is likely going to be in a few areas, with other aspects of your device like the battery life likely suffering.

4. Incompatible Third-Party Apps

iOS is all about apps so it makes little sense to use the latest version of the OS which is going to be incompatible with plenty of third-party apps. While basic apps might just work fine on iOS 12, games and other advanced apps are unlikely to work properly on the OS until it is updated by their respective developers for the OS. And that is not going to happen until Apple releases the iOS 12 Golden Master release which will happen sometime in September. So, until then, it is better to stay away from iOS 12 beta releases if some third-party apps are too important for your workflow.

5. No Jailbreak

Now, this is not going to matter to users who have not jailbroken their iPhone. But if you have a jailbroken iPhone running iOS 11, it is better to stick to it especially with an iOS 11.3.1 jailbreak on the horizon. Even if developers find any vulnerability in iOS 12 that allows for a jailbreak, they are unlikely to disclose it right now since Apple would then end up patching it with the next beta release. Instead, they will hold on to it until the final release of the OS in September.

6. Missing Features

Sure, iOS 12 comes with plenty of new features but most of them are broken right now or simply missing from the beta release. This is because Apple is still working on them and they are going to be only ready by the time the final release of the OS in September. Using a beta release of the OS is also going to leave you disappointed because after Apple’s keynote you will have high expectations from the OS. However, when you install and give iOS 12 a spin on your iPhone or iPad, the lack of missing features and bugs will leave you disappointed. Thus, it is better to wait for the final release of the OS instead of going ahead and installing an unfinished version of the OS.

Apple will continue to make improvements to iOS 12 with future beta releases of the OS. Most of these changes will be aimed at optimizing the OS for its existing devices, adding the missing features, and fixing all the reported bugs. If you are still impatient and cannot wait to install iOS 12 on your iPhone or iPad, I’d recommend you to install it on your iOS device which is not your daily driver as this will end up saving you a lot of headache and trouble.
