Digitimes report that Samsung is the exclusive AMOLED display supplier for the iPhone 8 for Apple in 2017. The company is capable of supplying around 20 million OLED panels per month based on its existing production capacity.
The report corroborates what we have heard in previous reports and says that Apple will use LCD panels on the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhones. The new premium Plus iPhone, however, will sport a 5.8-inch curved OLED panel. The source notes that Apple expects to ship 60-70 million units of the AMOLED-equipped iPhone in 2017 alone.
Apple will launch 4.7-, 5.5- and 5.8-inch new iPhone models in second-half 2017, with TFT-LCD panels to be used in the former two models and AMOLED for the 5.8-inch one, the sources said. Global shipments of the AMOLED iPhone in 2017 are estimated at 60-70 million units, the sources noted.
The touch sensors for the AMOLED panels will be supplied by Japan-based Nissha Printing, with the bonding of AMOLED display and touch sensors being done either by Samsung Display or TPK Holding and General Interface Solution.
Apple has been looking for alternative OLED panel suppliers, but the company has not met with much success. Almost every other display maker is currently struggling with their OLED production facility or yield issues and are incapable of supplying Apple with OLED panels in decent numbers.
Finally, the report cites that Apple’s supply-chain partners in China will start production of the iPhone 8 in small quantities in March 2017, with mass production slated to start from May-June.
