SemiRestore8

As you’ve probably heard by now, Pangu doesn’t work with the iOS 8.1.1 update released earlier in the week as Apple has patched a number of vulnerabilities used by Pangu Team, so jailbreakers have been advised to avoid upgrading to it.

If the iOS 8.1.1 update has got you worried, then we’ve some good news for you. CoolStar, the developer of SemiRestore has just released SemiRestore8, an updated version of his tool which adds support for iOS 8 – iOS 8.1 just in time.

SemiRestore was first released for iOS 6.x. It is a nifty tool that allows users to restore their jailbroken iOS device to near stock condition without losing the jailbreak. SemiRestore will be even more critical when Apple stops signing iOS 8.1, which will make it impossible to downgrade from iOS 8.1.1 to iOS 8.1.

SemiRestore8 can come in handy when you get into a reboot loop issue because of a problematic/buggy tweak, which can usually force you to restore your device, and would also mean losing the jailbreak. Since it removes the jailbreak tweaks during the semi-restore process, it can help in such cases.

SemiRestore needs OpenSSH, so as we had adviced in a post earlier in the week, you should install OpenSSH on your jailbroken iOS device, so that you have the option to use it. Please note that you should change the password after installing OpenSSH to change the root password of your jailbroken iOS device to prevent someone from remotely accessing your iOS device. You can check our guide if you need help.

SemiRestore8 for iOS 8 – iOS 8.1 is currently available only for Windows (supports Windows XP SP3 or higher) and Linux. The Mac version still needs to be updated, and should hopefully be released soon. We’ll let you know as soon as when SemiRestore for Mac is reeased, so don’t forget to join our Facebook Fan pagefollow us on Twitteradd us to your circles on Google+ or subscribe to our RSS feed.

You can download SemiRestore8 from this link. It is compatible with all jailbroken iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch models running iOS 5.0 through 8.1. Please go through the following points before you proceed to semi-restore your device, and don’t forget to let us know how it goes if you do give it a shot.

  • SemiRestore supports Windows XP SP3 or higher.
  • SemiRestore supports 32 & 64 Bit Linux (Ubuntu 14.04 or a higher equivalent distro).
  • Windows users must have iTunes, and .NET 4.0 or higher installed.
  • Linux users must have libimobiledevice, GTK 3, libusbmuxd-tools, and openssl installed (which should be by default).
  • Linux users must read the README file
  • There may be a better way to fix your current problem. For example, to fix “Safe Mode” issues, you can just uninstall Mobile Substrate from Cydia.
  • Like any other restore, make sure you backup your data if you want it later.
  • Avoid using your iOS device or anything related to iTunes or XCode during the Semi-Restore. Why not actually go outside?
  • This process can not and does not repair broken system files! Avoid all Siri Ports, as they are not only illegal (except for Spire on 5.0.1) but they also create problems and may potentially break system files (even Spire can cause this).
  • Your device will respring or reboot several times during the Semi-Restore. This is perfectly normal, so don’t panic.
