One of major new features in iOS 8, is the all-new Messages app, which includes a number of new features and cool user interface changes.

One of new user interface changes in the Messages app in iOS 8 is the way to send video messages.

iOS 7 or earlier, when you tapped on the camera button, it would prompt you whether you wanted to “Take Photo or Video” or choose an existing one. Tapping on “Take Photo or Video” would launch the camera user interface, where you could switch between Photo and Video mode.

Apple has made it a lot easier and quicker to send video messages in iOS 8.

How to send an video message in the Messages app in iOS 8

  • Launch the Messages app from the Home screen
  • Tap on the new message icon at the top right corner of the screen.
  • Tap on the + button to add a contact. Note: You can also do this while you’re in a conversation with someone.
  • Tap and hold on the Camera button on the left.

iOS 8 - Listen to audio message

  • This will display an all-new circular translucent menu.

iOS 8 - Message app - video messages

  • Swipe to the right to start recording the video message with your thumb. Don’t release your thumb.
  • When you’re done recording the video message, release the thumb.

That’s it. Your video message will be sent to the contact. If you don’t want to send the message then swipe to the left to delete it.

How to keep the video message

The video messages will automatically self-destruct in two minutes after being sent, however, if you want to keep the video message, all you need to do is tap on Keep just below the message if you choose to keep it.

How to send an existing video from the Camera roll

If you want to send an existing video then it’s the same as in iOS 7. Follow these steps:

  • Instead of tapping and holding on the Camera button. Just tap on the Camera button, it will prompt you if you want to either “Take Photo or Video” or “Photo Library”.

iOS 8 - Video messages - existing

  • Tap on Photo Library.
  • Tap on the video you want to send, and then tap on the Choose button at the bottom right corner.
  • Then hit on the Send button to send the video.

Notes:

  • The feature is available only with iMessage, so ensure that it is enabled in the Settings app (Settings > Messages – iMessage).
  • You can use this feature in the Messages app on your iPhone, iPad and iPod touch running on iOS 8.

The new user interface may take some time to get used to, but it’s very cool and much faster. Let me know how it goes in the comments.
