MacBook Pro teardown

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro without the Touch Bar went on sale yesterday, and it has already been torn apart by the folks over at OWC. The teardown, which is still a work in progress, reveals that the SSD on the base 13-inch MacBook Pro is removable.

While the SSD on previous MacBook Pro was detachable, it was soldered to the motherboard which meant that replacing it was not possible. On the new 13-inch MacBook Pro, however, the SSD is not only removable, but it is also not glued to the logic board. Getting to the SSD also requires one to remove the speaker module.

The SSD is held in place by a very strong tape that covers its port, but in case you make up your mind on replacing the SSD of your new MacBook Pro, it really should not deter you from the procedure.

The OWC team also notes that while prying open the bottom of the laptop was more difficult than previous generations, it was not glued which made things easier. Interestingly, the team also notes that the new 13-inch MacBook Pro will automatically power itself on when you open the lid, irrespective of whether you press the power button or not.

The new 13-inch MacBook Pro comes with a super fast SSD that is capable of reaching speeds of up to 3.1GB/s. So, if you are planning on replacing the SSD on your new MacBook Pro with a higher capacity one, make sure to use one that offers similar speed as to what Apple has used.
